The mix of a Mexique Table by Charlotte Perriand, Lantern Floor Lamp, by Apparatus and a desert scape backdrop showcasing the classic modern reissued pieces from Cassina's Capitol Complex Collection originally designed by cousins Le Corbusier + Pierre Jeanneret is a sublime display.

Included in Unesco's 2016 Cultural Heritage list is the extraordinary architecture and masterfully planned government compound designed by cousins, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret — Capitol Complex. Located in Chandigarh city in India it included three buildings, three monuments and a lake, including the Palace of Assembly, Secretariat, High Court, Open Hand Monument, Geometric Hill and Tower of Shadows and has received accolades for its celebration of an independent nation open to modernity.

It is their deep respect for the cultural weight of these achievements that prompted Cassina’s Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret . . . The Italian furniture maker carefully studied pieces from the Chandigarh Capitol Complex and produced these models, with the support of the Fondation Le Corbusier, which granted access to its archives.

^ SR Hughes Spring 2020 Window Featuring Capitol Complex from Cassina

^ Found throughout the offices of the Secretariat, this chair is one of the most recognizable in Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex. The independent pieces, including the side bars in an inverted “V” supporting the armrests, are all made of solid wood. The Viennese woven cane backrest and seat, stretched across a wooden frame, are elements common in the area, much like the use of local woods like teak. Cassina’s reissue offers the classic version in teak, and two versions in natural and stained black oak.

^ The rooms were filled with overstuffed armchairs, all exhibiting the same “V” support structure theme. The only exposed wooden parts are the rests, connecting crossbars, and the external joints between the arms and the backrest. The armrests’ padding almost completely envelops them, creating the outline of a rounded, geometric shape, that along with the distinct seat and back cushioning, offer an immediate sense of comfort without abandoning their elegance and simplicity. Cassina’s reissue offers the classic version in teak, and two versions in natural and stained black oak.
